We live on a wonderfully small planet. We're fine up here in our corner. At the same time, a lot of disturbing things are happening: We have become so numerous, and our urges are changing the climate and polluting the sea, soil and air. We are displacing and exterminating other species without thinking about how we will manage a future without them. We make enough nuclear weapons to destroy ourselves many times over.
In two book projects: the picture books Poff (text and watercolors) and Bomben (text and woodcut), Eli Hovdenak conveys the unrest we experience in today's reality. We are living the good live and we look the other way, while we are burdened by thoughts of doom. We are thinking of possible ways out and hope for rescue for us and future earthlings.
"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness…" Dickens
Eli Hovdenak is educated at Statens Kunstakademi and the Norwegian Children's Book Institute. She is best known for her drawings and graphics, but she also makes picture books and public commissions.
