There is a place for us

In Hedvig Lien Rytter's exhibition, we are taken into a landscape that thematizes the relationship between play and dream, longing and the need for protection. The exhibition consists of works drawn with pen on paper, as well as an installation.

For a number of years I have worked with motifs that revolve around demolition plots and piles of material. These are a kind of border zone motifs I find on trips through the landscape where I live, often on the trip from my home to the studio. The thrown away materials are a fragmentation of something familiar and domestic, as in our dreams where elements of familiar things appear in seemingly new contexts.

On my trips I also find small cabins that someone have made of random materials. These are places for play and imagination, just like my childhood wooden huts in the woods behind the blocks in the surburbs where I grew up.

I will thematize the relationship between play and dream on the one hand and longing and the need for protection on the other. The play contains a great deal of existential seriousness; to play house is a concrete expression of the desire to make a room, to make a space in the world. - Hedvig Lien Rytter
