Notes on Architecture

The exhibition shows a new direction in Minna Lappalainen's art, at the same time as the new works are in clear connection with her previous works from the series House and Garden . In Notes on Architecture , motifs from the local environment, house and garden have been replaced with references to late modernist concrete architecture with the main emphasis on broken concrete . The photographic material that forms the basis for the exhibition comes from an archive Lappalainen has worked with for many years, not least characterized by her upbringing and experience of Finnish international modernism. The design of the works ranges from photo-based line drawings to abstract value studies and the physical materiality of the concrete is present in the form of a series of cast models. This physical and concrete materiality and approach is also found in a series of drawings made in coal dust, while the exhibition as a whole is structured around modernism's vocabulary of scale shifts, seriality and material expression.

Minna Hannele Lappalainen (b. 1964 in Finland) was educated at the Norwegian Academy of Fine Arts in Oslo. She has had solo exhibitions at e.g. Stavanger Kunstforening, Kunstnerforbundet, Haugesund Billedgalleri, Trondheim Kunstforening and Akershus kunstnersenter and has participated in a number of group exhibitions.
