Bookbinding course

Tegnerforbundet arranges bookbinding courses aimed at adults on the weekend of 24/25 November in the project room. The course is held by Lisa Bøthun, who runs her own book workshop in Tønsberg, and specializes in hand binding and restoration of books. Bøthun has taught bookbinding at Raulands Akademiet, Aftenskolen in Tønsberg and Steinerskolen in Vestfold.

Registration from October 1 in our online store. Click here.

About the course

Bookbinding is an old craft that appeals to both the dexterous and the creative. This course will show simple bookbinding techniques you can do at home without too much special equipment. We will make at least two books with several legs and rigid binders, that way you get to try out the technique and get to know the materials.

Saturday: at 10-17

We start with a presentation, some bookbinding history and material knowledge before we start folding (folding) sheets for a sketchbook. Then we make an extension and prepare the books for stapling (sewing).

We staple the sheets before gluing and cutting the books. Round the books before feeding them and putting them to dry at night.

Sunday: at 10-15

Materials science, we talk about different covers for books before we make binders for the books. Hang the books in the binders, before we glue down the cover and put in pressure. Loosen the books and remove any glue residue.

We end with a presentation of the books and a conversation about how to continue with bookbinding after the course.

You will be given a compendium that shows the workflow.

Course fee NOK 800 (includes material expenses for both course days).

It will be possible to borrow tools on the course, but if you want to take the tool home, you can buy a tool package. The tool package contains Falseben, bookbinding knife, steel ruler, folding blade knife and bookbinding awl for NOK 250.

The toolbox can be ordered here (from October 1).

In addition, you must bring:

Stationery, pencil, paper, eraser. Work clothes and cloth.
