The Norwegian Drawing Center's project "Illustrators in Residence" (IIR) was organized for the first time in 2015, and aims to highlight the high quality and diversity that exists in Norwegian illustration art. By letting selected actors from the field make Tegnerforbundet's project room their own throughout June, the public will gain insight into various work processes and greater knowledge of the field.
The first "Illustrator in Residence" in June is Lars Sandås.
Lars Sandås (1984) will during his project period in Tegnerforbundet further develop his ongoing work «In ruins: Syria» - a collage composed of approximately 140 watercolor and felt-tip pen drawings.
With "In ruins: Syria", Sandås will make us think about Syria's future, by drawing the country's past. The project tells about Syria's unique history and cultural position at a time when the country and its population are suffering unimaginable suffering, after over seven years in civil war. The work consists of a richly illustrated map of Syria which shows - in addition to important geographical information - historical, religious and cultural buildings and objects, flora and fauna: Mesopotamian idols, the ancient Roman ruins, the first churches and monasteries in the world, mosques, synagogues and magnificent castles and palaces from the Middle Ages.
Lars Sandås has a master's degree in Art from the Oslo Academy of the Arts. Sandås has had several illustration assignments since 2006, such as for Bangles & Brass records and ACT Entertainment. In 2016, he published his own book, "Drug Atlas - Oslo", in Stripa Forlag. He has had exhibitions in Norske Grafikere, Oslo, Spriten Kunsthall, Skien, Visningsrommet USF, Bergen, and Galleri BOA, Oslo. Lars Sandås is the winner of "Literature of the Year 2016" in NATT & DAG.
On Thursday, 28 July at 5 pm, there will be a "Tegnesnakk Spesial" (Drawing Talk) with the participants in "Illustrators in Residence". Read more here .
