At the board meeting in May, Tegnerforbundet established a working group with Christian Bloom, Anders Kvammen and Tanja Thorjussen to work specifically on artificial intelligence and how it affects the field for artists.
There are mainly three areas that concern us at Tegnerforbundet: 1. intellectual property and legal protection of visual content, 2. performers' finances and wages for work and 3. regulation and information about how AI is used.
For today's visual artists, it is impossible to know whether their intellectual property has been used as the basis for generating new illustrations on the other side of the globe, or in the local newspaper. It is therefore interesting to follow the work on the DSM Directive(Digital Market Directive), which affects copyright regulations in Norway based on the implementation of two EU directives in Norwegian law. NBK's lawyers are working on this, and we are in dialogue with them about how Tegnerforbundet can contribute and how we can communicate what is now being done to our members.
The working group has spent the spring exploring what we can focus on and how we can tackle this extensive topic, and in the fall we will gather the threads and communicate what we have found out to our members. After the summer, we will also be conducting a survey among our members that focuses on how they are affected by AI.
There have been several discussions about Meta's desire to scrap FB and Instagram for all visual content from June 26, and about how difficult it is to opt out of this.
Tanja Thorjussen, chairman of the Norwegian Drawing Association, made a statement in Klassekampen on June 5. However, according to the Norwegian Data Protection Authority (June 14), this has now been put on hold following input from Ireland's data protection authority. Let's hope this is a good start for data protection authorities around the world to work on the matter and protect us users as they should.
