Drawing Triennial 2023

Opening October 12, 2023

The Drawing Triennial 2023 has been titled All that Lies Between  and is a collaboration between actors in the field of drawing, text and art: Tegnerforbundet - the Norwegian Drawing Center, the National MuseumTenthaus (with its three locations) and Deichman Bjørvika. The exhibition opens at all four venues on Thursday, October 12th. 63 national and international artists participate in this year's triennial, focused on two of the most historically important forms of human communication – drawing and text.

The curatorial group for Tegnetriennalen 2023 is Ottar Karlsen, Roddy Bell and Hilde Lunde.

Visual identity: Ariane Spanier

While developing the triennial, the curatorial group posed several questions about drawing and text: Can drawing be understood as a separate language? Are there things that can only be expressed through drawing, or only through words? What happens at the level of the brain when we see a drawing, versus when we read a text? Is this experience unique to each individual, or are there patterns that bind us together? Can we conceive of an abstract text, and if so, what meanings can such text contain? What determines whether an idea, a feeling or an experience ends up as a text or a drawing? What can the illustrations of a historical text tell us about what it is like to live and make choices today?

The Drawing Triennial 2023 has aimed to examine the relationship between the written and the drawn, the said and the unsaid, and everything in between, themes which will be illuminated through several different and parallel projects. One of these is The Book of Whispers, an artist's book developed and published by Tegnerforbundet in connection with the triennial. Original works from this book will be displayed at Deichman Bjørvika.

The Drawing Triennial 2023 also includes a rich dissemination program titled Inbetween  which will create an activating framework around the theme of the triennial. The program takes place at the four exhibition locations.

The Drawing Triennial is produced and owned by Tegnerforbundet, and this is the tenth edition of the Drawing Triennial (formerly Drawing Biennial).

The Drawing Triennial 2023 is supported by Fritt Ord and the Arts Council Norway.
